Project Summary
DELIVER Nigeria: Strengthening Vegetable Value Chains and Reducing Post-Harvest Losses
Partner: Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
Project Duration: July 2024 – June 2027
Location: Kano and Kaduna States, Nigeria
Overview
Bunkasa Agritech Limited is partnering with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) under the DELIVER Nigeria project (DEcent LIVelihoods for small-scale producers delivered through Economic & Resilient food systems in Nigeria) to strengthen vegetable value chains, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers across Northern Nigeria.
The project is part of a broader consortium effort funded through the Accelerating Resilient Food Systems in Africa (ARFSA) programme and implemented by GAIN, Wageningen University & Research, and other technical partners.
Bunkasa’s Role
As a local agribusiness and post-harvest solutions provider, Bunkasa supports the delivery of market-oriented interventions that help farmers move produce efficiently from farm to market while reducing losses along the value chain.
Key areas of contribution include:
Training farmers, aggregators, transporters, and market actors on post-harvest handling and management.
Promoting the adoption of reusable plastic crates as a safer alternative to traditional raffia baskets for transporting vegetables.
Building the capacity of aggregation centers and market actors on produce grading, sorting, packaging, and quality management.
Facilitating market linkages between farmers, aggregators, traders, and institutional buyers.
Supporting the development of sustainable business models that improve access to markets and increase farmer incomes.
Providing technical support on reducing food loss and waste across vegetable supply chains.
Impact
Through the DELIVER Nigeria project, Bunkasa is helping to create more resilient and efficient vegetable value chains by:
Reducing post-harvest losses during harvesting, transportation, and marketing.
Improving produce quality and shelf life.
Increasing incomes for smallholder farmers and market actors.
Strengthening access to profitable markets.
Promoting climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices.
Enhancing food availability and nutrition through improved vegetable supply systems.
Results to Date
Working alongside GAIN and other consortium partners, Bunkasa has successfully delivered capacity-building programmes for farmers and value-chain actors, promoted improved post-harvest technologies, and supported market-driven solutions that contribute to a more efficient and inclusive food system in Northern Nigeria.
The project aligns with Bunkasa’s mission of building resilient agricultural supply chains that reduce food loss, improve farmer livelihoods, and strengthen food security across Africa.
